Karuna, often rendered as compassion, is the wish that beings may be free from suffering. It begins with noticing difficulty without turning away, then responding with a mind that does not harm.

Karuna and metta support one another. Metta is the wish for well-being; compassion turns toward suffering with a wish to help where it is appropriate. Neither requires a grand gesture to be practiced.

In family and community life, listening attentively, speaking respectfully, and helping without demanding a return are ordinary ways to cultivate compassion. Helpful action also protects the dignity of the receiver and the boundaries of the giver.
